Non-stick cookware is a mainstay in many kitchens. But the once-ubiquitous “Teflon” coatings are falling from favor. They are being displaced by a new technology – ceramic.

Ceramic is tough, does not release toxic chemicals at high heat, and is easier on the environment to manufacture. Plus, it is difficult to make even burnt cheese stick to it. These and other qualities make ceramic coated pots a “must-have” for many cooks.

If you are in the market for new pots and pans, we have reviewed the 10 best ceramic cookware sets. As a bonus, we also include some buying tips at the end to help those considering ceramic cookware not on our list.

Caraway makes cookware for discerning cooks. These pans perform well, look good, are easy to clean and built to last. You also have five colors to choose from to match your kitchen decor. (Cream, Grey, Perracotta (Pink + Terracotta), Sage, Navy)

The features found in this set include some small details that make a big difference. Vented lids, heavy aluminum bodies, and high walls on large pans allow you to cook like a pro, for a crowd.

If you have an induction cooktop or plate, no worries. The Caraway cookware works with multiple stove types: gas, electric, and induction.

Rivets fasten the handles tight to the pan. Plus, they use a “Y” design to stop the heat from creeping up the handle. This helps to keep them safe to touch when cooking on the stovetop.

Of course, the stainless steel handles will get hot in the oven and you will need your best oven mitts. These pans and lids are oven-safe to 650°F. That is higher than most of its competitors.

Caraway even gives you non-stacking storage options. The handles come with holes if you prefer hanging the pans. But you can also store them with included individual stands. These holders connect with built-in magnets if you want to keep all the pans together.

Lids have a way of being unruly or even getting lost. But this set addresses that problem. The lids come with a canvas organizer that hangs on hooks. You can place it on the wall, or the back of a cabinet door.

The recommended care and cleaning is to hand wash and only use the dishwasher sparingly. But the ceramic non-stick makes manual cleaning with soap and water easy. Caraway also recommends using non-metallic utensils.

As you might guess, the Caraway Ceramic Cookware is a bit pricey. But this is a quality set of pans that will handle any cooking task in the kitchen and last a long time.

Oven Safe: Pan 600°F; Lid 425°F︱Induction: Yes︱Riveted Handles: Yes︱Warranty: 2 Years

Greenpan named their company for the ceramic coating’s more eco-friendly nature. To make ceramic coated pans, a manufacturer releases less CO2. There is also no danger of toxic off-gassing when cooking at high temps as there is with Teflon coatings.

So, they are serious about ceramic cookware. But this Valencia Pro cookware set gives you lots of pieces, with some great features.

First, this set is induction ready. Not all Greenpan sets work with induction. And not everyone uses induction. But induction offers those without gas a way to have the precise heat control of gas, in an electric plate. More people are starting to use it.

Another attractive aspect, these pans and are dishwasher safe. Let’s face it, many home cooks rely heavily on the dishwasher. For some cooks, this is a must-have in a cookware set.

Serious cooks often start a dish on the stovetop, then finish in the oven. With this set, no problem. The pans are oven-safe to 600°F and the lids to 425°F.

But the diamond reinforced non-stick coating will draw many to this set. It means you can use metal utensils.

The Valencia cookware set comes in gray. That is because of the anodized aluminum used on the exterior. Many consider this to be a higher-end finish since it is hard and durable.

For eleven pieces, you can pay less than you will for this Valencia set. But this is not the most expensive set on our list and the quality in this set is well worth the price.

Tefal invented the non-stick fry pan in 1954. In effect, they invented the nonstick cookware category. So, it is not surprising to find they now also offer ceramic cookware.

The most unique feature of this cookware set is the thermo-spot technology. Once the pan reaches cooking temperature, the spot changes to let you know it is ready. Preheating has never been easier.

You have a choice of colors, black, gold, or blue. The gold is unusual and almost has a light copper look to it.

These affordable pans also come with color-matched handles that are riveted on. The pans/handles are oven safe to 350F. Most of the pans also come with vented, glass lids that have color-matched knobs, also oven-safe.

Designed to be dishwasher safe, you can wash them by hand or pop them into the dishwasher. It’s up to you. But T-Fal strongly recommends hand washing. They also limit what detergents you should use in a dishwasher.

As for utensils, T-Fal does not recommend metal. Their manual advises you to use wood or plastic.

Also, induction fans will be disappointed. These are not your pans and you need to keep looking.

But for a great price, you get a nice selection of pans with thermo-spot technology. Plus, T-Fal offers a limited lifetime warranty with this set.

Set Includes:

  • 8.5 and 10.5 inch fry pans
  • 11 inch fry pan w/ lid
  • 1 QT saucepan w/ lid
  • 2 Qt saucepan w/ lid
  • 5 QT dutch oven w/ lid
  • 4 nylon utensils

Calphalon is well known by serious cooks. They built a reputation for quality pots and pans with anodized aluminum exteriors. This 11 piece set is an interesting choice for those who like the classic gray, hard, anodized outer finish.

The non-stick ceramic coating on the interior is white. This contrasts nicely with the gray exterior. Of course, the non-stick surface is slick and easy to cook on and clean. But you do want to avoid metal utensils when cooking.

What makes these pans interesting is the cast stainless steel handles. They are long, solid, and built to last. Plus, they are securely riveted to the pan and use a “V” cut out for stay-cool convenience.

The selection and size of pans included are perfect for a family. The 3-quart saute pan will become a favorite in many kitchens. Also, the 5-quart Dutch oven is perfect for making stock or one-pot dishes. Some pans even have handy fill lines to make things easy.

Calphalon also paid attention to the lid design. They come with stainless handles and straining holes built into the lid rim. Some pans also have pour spouts to aid in straining or pouring right from the pot.

While this set is expensive, you do get a 10-year warranty when you buy this well-built, complete set of pans.

When you think of Italy, you think of food and cooking. Bialetti has been making cookware for decades and many of us own one of their stove top espresso makers. But a ceramic cookware set from them is no surprise.

Plenty of people will be drawn to Italian made cookware. Especially from a manufacturer with a long track record. If that is you, this cookware has a lot to offer.

A heavy gauge aluminum body provides even heating and a durable pan. The exterior is anodized to provide a hard durable shell.

On the interior, a gray ceramic non-stick coating provides easy release for the food. It also makes cleaning with soap and water a breeze. Note, cleaning in the dishwasher is NOT recommended.

Long, contoured cast stainless steel handles go from stove cooking to the stove, no problem. They are oven safe up to 400°F. And the handles are double riveted with a “V” cutout to help keep them cool.

You cannot use these pans on induction burners. But they work on just about any other cooktop or burner.

For an imported professional grade set of cookware, the price is reasonable. The 10-year warranty is nothing to sneeze at, either. So, if you want a modest looking, rugged workhorse set of pans with an Italian heritage, this may be your first choice.

Set Includes:

  • 1.5 and 3 QT saucepans w/ lids
  • 8 and 10 inch fry pans

Guide to Buying the Best Ceramic Cookware

Should you venture to buy a ceramic cookware set on your own, there are a few basics you should keep in mind. We have outlined these below for your use.

Ceramic Coatings are Like People

On the inside of a pan, non-stick ceramic coatings are naturally slick. They allow you to cook without excess oil or butter. Also, there is no need for seasoning like there is with cast iron.

Ceramic coatings are mineral-based. They do not release toxic gas at high heat like Teflon coatings. Plus, producing the ceramic produces 60% less CO2 than traditional non-stick coatings. For these reasons, ceramic coatings are considered eco friendly.

So, eco friendly and great non-stick characteristics combined to make ceramic cookware quite popular. It’s popularity continues to grow.

But like people, ceramic coatings vary quite a bit. Some manufacturers modify the ceramic to add scratch resistance. So, if you are rough with your pans, you may want to look for a pan rated for use with metallic utensils.

If you are fashion conscious, even in the kitchen, you will be happy to know ceramic coatings come in many colors. So, if you have a theme in your kitchen, it is possible to find pans with different colors on the inside and outside.

Handles, Handles, Handles

When buying almost anything, you should evaluate the weakest component/aspect. And with pots and pans, that is usually the handles.

For starters, the handles should contour to fit your hand comfortably. Some manufacturers even install rubber on the handle to soften the feel in your hand.

But that leads to another problem, many materials used to make the handles cannot hold up inside the oven. So, you need to know if the handles are oven safe. And if so, to what temperature. It is usually much lower than the pan’s maximum temperature.

Also, how the handle connects to the pan is important. Most feel rivets are superior to nuts and bolts or screws.

But threads can loosen over time and a wobble in the handle can lead to breaks. You need to be sure to tighten the handles when bolts are loose. And that can be often.

However, cheap rivet jobs can loosen over time, too, And there is nothing you can do to tighten them. So, be sure to get riveted handles from a reputable manufacturer when you can.

Must-Have Pans

If you have a set of pans already, you may not want or need certain pans. If you are just setting out, at a minimum you will want the basics; a fry pan, sauce pans, and a dutch oven or stock pot. And maybe more.

The pans included in a cookware set are one of the first things you should look at. This is an obvious way to weed out sets that will not work in your kitchen.

Warranty

The length of warranty is a sign of the manufacturer’s confidence in the product’s quality. It is not a guarantee that you will never have a problem with the product, but it is a good indicator.

Also, buy from a known manufacturer. Warranties mean nothing if the manufacturer goes out of business. Or even worse, some just choose to ignore or fail to honor the warranty.

So, don’t assume you need to buy the longest warranty you can get. Buy a set of cookware that has a good warranty AND it comes from a well-respected manufacturer.

Dishwasher Safe

Everyone has their own habits and comfort zone. For many in the kitchen, that means putting as much in the dishwasher as possible. But not all ceramic cookware is dishwasher safe.

The dishwasher uses strong detergents and high heat to clean the dishes. For a lot of pan coatings, inside and out, that is an aggressive environment. So, it is not uncommon to see discoloring after going through a cleaning cycle.

With cheap pans, you may have worse damage. Warping can happen as well as peeling of the coatings both on the interior and exterior.

So, heed the dishwasher recommendations when shopping for ceramic cookware. And if you do put your pans in the dishwasher, make sure you get a set that is dishwasher safe.
